Five ways to boost your metabolism

1. Eat spicy foods

Spicy foods aka chillies (and even ginger) contain an ingredient (constituent) called capsaicin which when eaten causes the burn on your tongue (sweet capsicum also contains this, however at a much lower level translating to a non-spicy food).

The capsaicin begins to increase the bodies temperature as it is thermogenic. this then causes the body to ramp up metabolism.

The hotter the chilli, the higher the metabolic increase you will get. Chilies can also help you to feel fuller for longer, which may help reduce caloric intake aiding in weight loss.

2. Do a high intensity workout

Conducting high intensity training has been shown to increase metabolism contributing to weight loss. A program called High Intensity Interval training has shown to increase exercise post-oxygen consumption. This means that it can raise your resting metabolic rate for approximately 24 hours. A higher resting rate means increased fat burning for longer periods which can translate to less workouts per week. Increase exercise translates to increased muscle mass, this then increases your body's natural metabolic rate.

Make sure to consult a professional before starting any exercise regime.

3. Increase your protein

Somewhat like our capsaicin, protein can increase thermic activity in the body. Including good quality sources of protein may increase thermogenesis, and therefore, metabolism by a whopping 20-30%, which may make your body burn more fat around the clock. Including good quality lean, grass fed meats and fish and/or high-quality organic vegetable sources of protein are essential in building all cells, hormones and neurotransmitters which translates to feeling better, happier, and healthier.

4. Drink Herbal Tea

Herbal tea contains many different constituents that can help to increase thermogenic activity as well as increasing metabolism. Flavonoids, catechins and polyphenols can all increase metabolism in the body.

Catechins boost metabolism while breaking down fats.

Polyphenols may decrease body weight, blood pressure and can maintain blood sugar metabolism; all this means greater fat breakdown increasing base metabolic rate. Some of the best herbs that contain these constituents are Green Tea, Moringa and Yerba mate. Other herbs can help to control appetite and blood sugar response, making a more efficient working system.

5. Get a good night's sleep

Believe it or not studies are emerging showing that sleep helps to regulate metabolism levels.

When your sleep patterns are altered and your body is not getting the required amount it alters glucose utilisation and hormones (leptin and ghrelin) that are involved in metabolism regulation, and therefore, appetite.

The less sleep you have the slower your body works, which translates to a reduced metabolic rate.

Who remembers waking up after a crappy sleep raring to go all day??

Metabolism is the process in the body that helps to build up (anabolism) and breakdown (catabolism) energy to maintain life.

It is imperative to keep a healthy high functioning metabolism, to ward off disease and excess free radicals, the higher the metabolism the more effective maintenance of the body. As we have shown, it is easy to include small changes in our everyday life to help keep our metabolism working efficaciously. Including good quality proteins and select natural constituents, a high intensity interval training program, clean and organic herbal teas and regular 7+ hours of sleep every night, ensures a well-oiled, smoothly running and high functioning metabolic rate.

The more muscle mass we can hold on to as we age, the more we can stay looking and feeling younger. Is an increased metabolism the new Fountain of Youth??
